I had always a prediliction for chairs; they come to me. In Paris I often find them on the street.
In 2003, when I began preparing to shoot Gallerande, I decided not to use standard wheelchairs for the traveling shots
(a common alternative to costly dolly systems), but to construct my own traveling chairs, to find (or invent)
the right handles for each chair, to adapt them, to attach the chairs to wooden panels and equip them with wheels.
The first four traveling chairs became major elements in my film and, like the cameras themselves, they play a primary role in the picture.
